Dr. Chengkai Fan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mining, Metallurgical, and Materials Engineering at Laval University starting in September 2024. He was a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alberta (UAlberta) between December 2023 and August 2024. He received his Ph.D. in Mining Engineering from UAlberta (2023), M.S. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (2019), and B.E. in Geological Engineering from the Anhui University of Science and Technology (2016). Dr. Chengkai Fan has a diverse background and research experience in mining and geotechnical engineering in the last decade. His research interests focus on applying machine learning and data science techniques in mine transport, cement mixture design, and geothermal areas; optimization and design of mine truck haulage (e.g., improving truck productivity) under extreme weather, and fiber optic sensing technologies and its engineering applications (e.g., rock deformation and core flooding monitoring). In addition, He has interests in experimental studies and numerical modeling of fluid migration in porous media during CO2 geological storage. Since 2022, he has been a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum and the Society of Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration. In 2024, he joined the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (E.I.T.). He is also a professional reviewer for multiple recognized journals in mining, geotechnical, and applied soft computing.
